Chemical Applications of Group Theory
|
Course Objectives:
This course is designed to give qualitative or semiqualitative treatment of group theory with its applications in chemistry with particular emphasis on vibrational and electronic spectroscopy of inorganic and organometallic complexes.
Course Description:
This course covers the following: symmetry elements and point symmetry groups; reducible and irreducible representations; the character table; symmetry species of atomic orbitals and spectral terms; vibrational spectroscopy (I.R. and Raman active bands); bonding in transition metals; electronic spectroscopy (ligand field spectra of selected octahedral, tetrahedral and square planar complexes).
